Skinny tablet PCs pack Core Duo, security
Nov. 21, 2006

Fujitsu claims this new pair of slate-style tablet PCs to be the first to offer the latest Intel Core Duo processors. The thin, light-weight ST5100 series tablets boast a long list of security features, run Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, and are "Windows Vista capable," according to the company.

The ST5111 features a 10.4-inch full-color XGA screen, which is optimized for direct sunlight conditions, and which Fujitsu calls the "largest front-lit reflective display in the industry." The ST5112, meanwhile, offers a 12.1-inch transmissive indoor/outdoor XGA display with greater than 160 degrees of viewing angle, according to Fujitsu.

Both ST5100 series tablets offer hard drive data protection via an accelerometer-based shock sensing system, which retracts the drive's heads when sudden movement or vibration is detected. Interestingly, the shock sensor can also be set to password-lock the system when it is touched, preventing unauthorized access to data, according to the Fujitsu.

Other security features included in both tablets, according to Fujitsu, include an embedded Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a dedicated Smart Card slot, Fujitsu Security Application Panel, two-level hard drive password, BIOS-enabled Computrace/LoJack theft recovery service support, and a universal lock slot. In addition to these, the ST5112 also incorporates a fingerprint sensor.
